Turtles and other “biests” – wonderful observations, hope but also a sad moment!

Snorkelling with sea turtles+ in October/November 2024

08/11/24 at noon: Finally another five-minute turtle encounter while snorkelling, again in the White bay! I also saw 2 lionfish, lots of flute perch and various swarms of fish.

29/10/24 17:20: After a wonderful sunset at the (closed) tavernas in the neighbouring village of Koutsouras, I get a phone call from Switzerland and at the same time the head of a sea turtle emerges from the water, less than 10m from the shore. Not just once, but every minute or so during the entire 15-minute call, which is perhaps why there were several of them. Unfortunately, I couldn’t make a phone call and take photos at the same time. But here is the sunset:

Shortly aftre the sunset, a head of the turtle arised.

27/10/24: Once again in the White Bay – I wanted to find out: Would it work again? It took a bit of perseverance (and mental preparation), but I did indeed encounter another sea turtle along the coast in the direction of Sauna Bay. This time it was a medium-sized specimen. On the way back I encountered the poisonous lionfish, at a safe distance.
But the best was yet to come: in Langada, the strap of my diving goggles broke (okay after >15 years) and so I swam out as normal. As the beach there has uncomfortable boulder stones, I let myself drift back to the shore with the weak waves. Then something tickled my left foot, as if it had been sucked in. A little scared, I looked back and sure enough, an octopus had attached itself! It remained crouched in the shallow water between the stones and eyed its ‘catch’. After 1-2 minutes, it retreated into the deeper water.

22/10/2024: Once again! At roughly the same spot as two years ago, a pretty large sea turtle paddled to the rocky niches in the reef by the ‘fossilised dragon’ in White Bay. This time, too, it was possible to observe it for 5-10 minutes.

11/10/2024: As in November 2022, I had the privilege of watching a sea turtle forage for food on the seabed – for about 10 minutes. It saw me too, but didn’t let that put it off. It was an adult specimen, estimated to be 80 cm in diameter. First, however, Daniel spotted her head on the surface of the water from the shore of the sauna bay when she came up for air. I then swam after it with the snorkel. Another extraordinary nature experience!

Observations on the beach in June 2024

We are all the happier that there is regularly offspring to be expected: On 22 June 2024 this turtle just landed in front of our place at the nudist beach of Langada (see video)! In addition, three nests are identified and marked at the neighbour beach of Diaskari and another at the “Sauna beach”. On that site it is very difficult to protect such a nest, because Greeks (and silly tourists) drive with their 4×4 directly on the beach.

22 June 2024: This turtle is looking for a good place to deposit its eggs at Langada beach.

In 2022, my husband Daniel spotted in August at least four nests of eggs on Lagada beach. The places have been marked so that walkers or bathers do not stand on them right away. However, the risk is low on the large and not very busy beach. The young hatch about 50 days after the eggs are laid, provided the eggs are not eaten by dogs or seagulls. We hoped the best!

First time

On 10 November 2022, something incredible happened: I was snorkelling in White Bay (my preferred hidden place). The water was already a bit fresh (around 21°C) and milky from the gypsum. Suddenly I noticed a shadow to my right and then saw a large sea turtle swimming comfortably next to me. It elegantly floated up to catch some air and moved on with me. After 2-3 minutes, I then turned back so as not to disturb her. Later, I saw her again from the shore, taking a short breath. What an experience!

Update of 15 November 2022: Again I was snorkeling at the same place (2nd time since that special ecounter. I was slowly moving along the coast, struggeling a bit with the leaky mask. Then I recognised a flat stone on the ground, moving gently. On the second sight I could identify a neck and head. The big turtle was grazing the stones. After a minute or so, she was looking to me and then raised to the water surface. I turned back to beach for not disturbing too much my new friend.

Sad moments

At the end of May 2022 I saw a unfortunately dead specimen floating in the water. It was a sad sight and it was not clear how the magnificent specimen perished. Friends from France reported to have found another cadaver in 2023 and German friends just found one in June 2024.

A new ragwort subspecies discovered?

I photographed this orchid species on 14 April 2024 between Chandras and Sitanos in the eastern mountains of Crete.

Ophrys cretica

The identification books speak of many subspecies and a wide range of forms for Ophrys cretica. The illustration and description of Ophrys cretica subsp. karpathensis fits best here. However, the patterns are clearly different (e.g. the “mischievous face” and the “belly”). Perhaps this is a separate subspecies that I have not yet found in my books? Does someone know more about this topic?

E-mobility – fairly unusual in East-Crete

They are still exotic here, e-bikes and even more so electric cars. As the solar panels of the Carobgarden Eco-House produce more electricity than is consumed in the household, an e-car makes perfect sense. I was able to buy an almost new Peugeot e208 in Piraeus at a reasonable price and took it to Heraklion by ferry. The outward journey to Makry-Gialos proved to be very relaxed and comfortable.

The e-car is now available for airport transfers and may be borrowed in consultation with me (Urs). It offers, including driver, space for:

  • 5 people with small luggage or rucksack
  • 4 people with one large suitcase (max. 80 cm high) and one piece of hand luggage each
  • 3 people with an XL suitcase and a normal suitcase, plus hand luggage
  • 2 people with one XXL suitcase and one normal suitcase, plus hand luggage

For clarification (e.g. tax authorities): This is neither a taxi nor a car hire service, but a service of courtesy for my friends.

New room layout from 2024

Until now, all flats were similarly equipped and offered ideal space for 2 people. In order to better fulfil the needs expressed so far, the following changes have been introduced:

  • Apt. #1 – the more spacious lounge with a single bed (95×190 cm). When this studio is not rented out and Urs is present, the parlour can be used as a shared lounge with a sofa and wood-burning stove – super cosy in the cooler months! When it gets warmer, there is now a sofa on the balcony.
  • Apt. #3 – the compact family room 4+1: In addition to the two single beds (95×190 cm each), there is a bunk bed (2 places 90×200 cm each) and a baby bed. Ready for occupancy (and photos) from February 2024.
  • Apt. #4 – the classic with the fantastic sea view: you sleep in a queen-size bed (160×200 cm) and wake up to a view directly out to sea – a dream!

New A/C devices for better comfort

In each apartment, the 16-year-old air conditioning system was replaced with new INVENTOR brand units. These air-to-air heat pumps can be used for cooling, heating and dehumidification. Their efficiency is twice as high as the previous units! In addition, the units can be adjusted on site via remote control and even worldwide via WiFi using my app. During the day, they profit from solar power produced with my own PV-panels.

A delicate subject – hopefully resolved now

What do you think of geckos? Nice, harmless, useful – a joy or not? And how do you feel about the grasshoppers and cicadas? Lizards, snakes, mice? Rather eerie, pleasing or neutral? Such animals are found throughout the Mediterranean.

Unfortunately, cockroaches also feel comfortable in the houses of warm regions, which we definitely reject, even disgust with them. As potential carriers of germs, we want to keep them away from us, but they don’t care much. Especially at night, they crawl out of their hiding places, scurry around, look for food and multiply, whether we like it or not.

Without exception, everywhere I mentioned this problem, I received confirming reports: cockroaches are omnipresent on the Mediterranean, even in the expensive luxury villa at 3000 EUR/night in the neighbouring village! Unfortunately, the Carobgarden Eco-House was not exempt from this in the summer of 2023. We had a heavy infestation, especially in my own flat. By means of recordings of the sewer cleaning, we were able to find the cause and fix it in the sewage system. Fine mesh screens were installed and all kitchens received a deep cleaning, including behind the kitchen appliances. Suspected areas were treated with pesticides. No more traces have been detected in the last 3 weeks.

If you have cockroaches or their tracks, please report it to me and/or Irini immediately! We have a highly effective bait paste, but we are only allowed to use it sporadically to avoid resistance. Spray can be found in the cleaning chamber under the stairs.

You can also help us prevent new infestations by:

  • Do not flush food down in the washing trough,
  • Use the sieves, if necessary weigh them down with a stone,
  • Always wash the dishes in the evening,
  • Put leftovers in the refrigerator or in a “Tupperware”.

P.S. (of 29/02/2024) To reassure you: neither cockroaches nor their tracks have been sighted since the targeted control measures in August 2023.

Not as hot in the summer as reported in the news

Update for July 2023

Although record heat waves were announced in the news, reaching 37°C in Central Europe (even a 37.4°C peak measured at my home in Switzerland on 11/07/2023) and 47°C in Athens or Sicily, it was comparatively pleasant here on the island. However, a noticeable wind blowed almost without interruption, but this contributes precisely to this moderate temperature regime. Here are the July weather records from the Carobgarden EcoHouse (see actual data from Netatmo on the foot of the page):

July 2023 temperatures measured in the garden under the carob tree.
Wind on the roof, with average per 10 min (blue) and gusts (black).

Fortunately, no forest fires have broken out in the region so far.

Summer 2022

Here in Switzerland we are groaning under the summer heat: Today 18.07.2022 the thermometer climbs up to 35° in the north and in the Valais, tomorrow it is supposed to be 38°C! Interestingly, the temperatures in Makry-Gialos are currently lower, with less cooling at night, which is quite welcome on the way out. The pleasant temperatures are thanks to the NW wind, which is only moderately noticeable on the beach:

Here is the link to the present weather forecast for Makrygialos (Crete) from Meteoblue.

New photovoltaic power production

This photovoltaic system has been installed since the end of June 2023. It is not yet connected to the grid, because the grid operator DEDDIE is behind schedule with the delivery of the electricity meter. As soon as everything is working, it will cover the electricity on the ground floor. As a side effect, the panels help to shade the south façade.
A second system is planned for the upper floor, which will be mounted on the roof. The environmentally friendly hot water is already produced thermally by means of a solar collector. The night-time electricity demand is covered by the subscribed wind power.

Successful start into the 2023 season

Together with friends we admired the wonderful landscape, birdlife and flowers in April. This year the flowering was about three weeks earlier than last year. The poor rainfall in winter was also noticeable, whereas it looks much better in the mountains. Even swimming in the sea was possible at 20°C water temperature! Some impressions here:
